A good run in Kona starts with restraint
The crowds make it easy to get carried away, while the heat and rolling terrain punish early mistakes. My advice is to keep the opening section controlled, use the aid stations properly and give yourself a chance to run well on the way home.
Give yourself time to settle
Feeling ordinary in transition does not mean your marathon is already in trouble. Even very good athletes can feel shaky and awkward getting their shoes on. Take the time you need to get organised, cool down at the first aid station and ease into your running.
Expect wet shoes and socks once you start using water to cool yourself. Stick with footwear and socks you have tested in wet conditions…
